Freedom Stories engages incarcerated survivors of violence to tell their stories of resilience so they can present themselves in the ways they want to be seen by the free world. This project seeks to reverse the common narratives of incarcerated survivors, and uplift their voices by bringing them back into the community. We have done this through events focused on raising awareness of the survivors themselves and how our prison nation criminalizes women and trans people of color for defending themselves. This project helps build connections between survivors, thereby reducing isolation, which is endemic to both domestic and state violence. It also builds a forum where survivors can reclaim their narratives and generate activism through their own storytelling.
